Wheelchair tires are one of the most essential parts of a wheelchair; it can identify what kind of terrain you usually go to. The two types of wheelchair tires are Pneumatic tires - are the type that is filled with air; and Airless tires - are filled with rubber, plastic or foam.

Wheelchair tires are one of the most essential parts of a wheelchair. The type of tires you select for your wheelchair will dramatically have an impact on your chair's smoothness, maneuverability, speed and control.
There are two main types of wheelchair tires the Pneumatic tires and airless tires.
Pneumatic tires are the type that are filled with air. They weigh lighter and they can provide users with smooth ride and easy maneuverability. But pneumatic tire maintenance is hard. Like most air-filled parts, pneumatic tires are vulnerable to punctures and frequently experience flats. Most pneumatic tires consist of the tire shell and an inner-tube insert that holds the air, which is called the ?interior?. In many cases, when a flat occurs, patching this insert will repair the tire, but with severe or repeated punctures you will need to replace the inner tube. Thus, this makes it more costly to buy every time this happens.
Airless tires for wheelchairs are filled with rubber, plastic or foam. Airless tires may not offer the smooth performance that pneumatics do, but they can last longer when it comes to durability. Since they contain no air, users won't have to concern themselves to having a flat tire and punctures. Manufacturers will often focus on the "flat-free" feature of airless tires.
There are generally three types of airless tires:
Semi-pneumatic tires for wheelchairs are usually made of solid rubber or plastic with a ring of air running through the center. Foam tires for wheelchairs are constructed from pneumatic tire inserts filled with polyurethane foam instead of air. Solid tires for wheelchairs are molded from rubber or plastic, these are the heaviest and most durable.
