A wheelchair battery is used to supply large amounts of electricity during daily runs. They don't have to be fully discharged in order for the user to recharge it again.

Batteries are used to store electrical energy; these are two or more cells that produce a direct current by converting chemical energy to electrical energy.
Wheelchair batteries are used differently than car batteries. The function of a car battery is to start the engine, whereas a wheelchair battery is used to supply large amounts of electricity during daily runs.
There are two types of batteries that are being used in running an electric wheelchair motor, wet and gel.
Wheelchair wet batteries require the helper of the user to add distilled water about once every two months. Wet batteries can be damaged permanently if the water level drops below the level of the battery plates. Since batteries are heavy and difficult to reach, adding water may sometimes be a hassle.
The wheelchair gel batteries do not need water. Corrosion problems are eliminated and are most likely to be brought along on an airplane, as airlines usually require the removal of batteries from the wheelchair and placed in a sealed container.
But when compared with wet battery, gel batteries have about 10 to 20 % less capacity than wet batteries; although, this is only important to those users who go long distances.
Batteries today can actually last longer than the old types of batteries. Most of these batteries are even approved for airline and public transportation. They don't have to be fully discharged in order for the user to recharge it again. Some if not a few, do not develop a ?memory? that limits their recharging. Although the cost is much higher than the lower technology batteries, a lot of people purchase this device because it lasts as long as or even longer than that of the old model batteries. |
