Sport has tremendous physical, psychological and social benefits for the participants, particularly young people. Positive role models provided by top athletes encourage young people with disabilities to use sport as a springboard for personal development.
Wheelchair is not only medical equipment but also sporting equipment. Now wheelchair sporting events parallel the world's most popular sports ? wheelchair downhill skiing, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair hockey, wheelchair volleyball and are more becoming televised. These wheelchair sports are used in the Paralympic Games wherein the players are amputees, blind or visually impaired athletes with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis or drawfism.
Despite the cost, what is good in this wheelchair sport is that it benefits disable athletes both mentally and physically. It achieves defected athlete's self-esteem, recreational enjoyment, social integration, healthy competition and overall health ? endurance, muscle strength, cardiovascular health, flexibility, and motor skills. It improves amputees in using prosthetic devices. It minimizes the risk of cardiac disease, high cholesterol, and less susceptible to virus and infection.
Sports play a vital role in the rehabilitation of those with disabilities and can often be a catalyst for increased confidence, self esteem and a positive outlook on life. For others it provides a way to maintain a healthy lifestyle or to explore new talents and strive for honors in the competitive arena. For all there is a sense of achievement.
