Manual Wheelchair |
|
|
People are tending to think about purchasing power wheelchair when they can no longer manage their standard manual wheelchair. First, however, it may be worth considering the range of active user wheelchairs that are available.
Manual Wheelchair or the Manual-Push Type wheelchair is a standard size wheelchair (18'' wide seat) with fixed arms and removable footrests. Also available are oversized wheelchairs with 20'' 22'' and 24'' wide seats.
There are two different models of manual wheelchair: the folding frame wheelchair and the rigid frame wheelchair. Among the two models, folding frame is the usual. It is made with an X-shaped brace at the center to make the frame fold sideways. Most users are incapable to load it in a vehicle without help because of its bulkiness and heaviness. Newer released versions of the model are lighter compared to the earlier steel model. But light folding models are still heavier than rigid frame wheelchairs due to their many parts and heavy folding footrests. Aside from heaviness, folding frame is not durable as rigid models. It is less efficient than rigid models; the possibility of wear and tear and troublesome to keep alignment might happen because of the moving joints.
The rigid frame wheelchairs have welded joints, folding seat back for transport, and wheels having quick-release axles allowing them to fit into a vehicle with ease. The ability to an easy carriage into car without help is possible because of the lightweight aluminum usually weighing mere 10 to 20 pounds (without wheels). The footrests on rigid wheelchairs are attached to the frame; similar to a platform that runs across the front. Some models have wheelchair latching bar connected to two flip-up wheelchair footrests. It is efficient and weight-reduced.
People are tending to think about purchasing power wheelchair when they can no longer manage their standard manual wheelchair. First, however, it may be worth considering the range of active user wheelchairs that are available. These are manual wheelchairs that are lightweight and have large propelling wheels on an adjustable axle, so that the position of the wheelchair user within the chair can be adjusted to optimize their propelling and maneuvering potential. A wheelchair user who may, previously, have found propelling a standard wheelchair too difficult may find that the reduced effort needed to propel an active user wheelchair is sufficient to regain independent mobility. The relative lightness of these wheelchairs, especially over powered wheelchairs, is an advantage if the chair has to be lifted and transported in and out of a car boot.
